Thursday: couldn't shift myself out of bed until almost noon. I asked Julie what she wanted to do for lunch, and after some debate, we settled on picking up from Nick's Charcoal Pit down on Snyder. She was stuck in a progression of meetings, so I drove over to pick it up. Not bad! It was kind of a mess to eat; I went through at least four paper towels. Afterwards, I did the dishes and vacuumed before starting a load of laundry. We had more broccoli & cheese soup for dinner, where I continued watching my weekly Disco Elysium stream. (Lauren got into the fishing village shack, explored the fishmarket, and met the first of the delinquent youths hanging around the church.) While that was going on, I transferred my IF project from my laptop to my desktop in preparation for more serious work tomorrow. Now I need to take a very late shower and get my clothes out of the dryer, though not necessarily in that order. My wrist has been hurting today, so it's time to get back to wearing my braces to bed, I think.

Wednesday: went to Chipotle for lunch and got groceries at Giant. After getting back, Julie helped me with my progress on the current Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp gardening event, which was one day away from completion. (I don't bring it up much, but this is a game I've been playing on a daily basis for five years.) She went to the gym while I started dinner: our old basil-and-vegetable pasta with feta. She spent a lot of the time today watching Arrested Development episodes in preparation for a trivia competition she was going to on Thursday; meanwhile, I prepared a way-too-long post on the IF community forum about the games I released in the last two years. I also started creating a YouTube list for a bunch of the music tracks I enjoy.

"Experiences occupy a spectrum ranging from f-space to u-space as a way of generalizing how unique they are, though colloquially, it's common to treat this continuum as a binary value: an experience or state of being that is difficult or impossible to reproduce is the state of being in u-space. (If all people form a Venn diagram of overlapping experiences, u-space is the tiny sliver in the middle which we contain and which none of our overlapping experiential neighbors contain.)

"In concrete terms, of course, all existence is necessarily u-space for the simple fact that I am me and no one else can experience being me, and this fundamental truth undermines any conception of f-space built upon such an experiential foundation. Still, humanity loves an abstraction, and the commonalities of life easily reduce to f-space even as experiential literalists protest that impossibility: one workday blends into another, one office job into another, one lazy Sunday into another.

"Even before the scale was codified, groups were using an approximation of it to assign value and status. u-space maximizers set forth principles of evaluation: a u-space had no power if it couldn’t be verified—anybody could make up a song and sing it to themselves, but there’s no way to know if the song was worth singing unless someone else heard it, and once that happened, the u-ness of the space started to rapidly f. The challenge, then, was to occupy u-spaces that could be freely discussed without reducing the difficulty of reproducing their constituent elements—which lead to risky, violent, illegal, and dangerous acts, culminating in a sort of 'extremism of novelty'. The apotheosis of this philosophy was utterly self-destructive, and even the supposed achievements of the so-called 'u-space martyrs' were ultimately undermined by copycats who wanted to be the 'only person to deliberately reproduce a u-space martyrdom,' or 'the only person to deliberately copy the act of someone reproducing a u-space martyrdom,' or 'the first person to knowingly copycat a copycat with the understanding that others will copy them as well,' and so on."

Sunday: digestive illness has waylaid me! Apparently the only way I could cope was to reference the Book of Mazarbul from The Lord of the Rings on facebook.

Saturday: Mike's wedding was today in Oklahoma City. I think we stayed at the Bricktown Hotel. Some of the guys attending got a little out of control after the reception.
