Sunday: since the scalloped potatoes always take a while to bake, Julie helped me out by peeling the potatoes before the end of my shift. I finished cooking the potatoes while Julie took a bath, and we watched more Ghosts, followed by more youtube once Julie went to bed. I finished off the previous hummus container with carrots before going to bed myself. Julie had brought new pillows when she'd been out-of-town, and the combination of stacked pillows with multiple cats arrayed across the bed made situating myself pretty challenging.

I'm still in Vienna with my parents. We went to the old Missouri State Penitentiary in Jefferson City and toured the place. Fascinating ruin, if a ghoulish piece of history.

As Julie typed in her facebook update: "We started this morning in Maine, drove across New Hampshire on the Kancamagus Highway, stopped in Montpelier for dinner, drove south through Worcester, MA, made a pit stop in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, and are ending our night here. Six states in ten hours of driving... that is pretty awesome." Maine was gorgeous, New Hampshire and Vermont only diminished due to having to follow Maine, Montpelier was kind of a weird disappointment—it's a tiny city that seemed closed-down and deserted when we were driving through in the early evening, but we found an original-style Pizza Hut just outside of town. I haven't had an authentic Pizza Hut salad bar in the ten years since we were here. Our trip through Massachusetts felt like we'd returned to civilization (an ironic reaction coming from a Kansan, now that I think about it), only for another odd vibe when we got to Woonsocket. We'd picked the town as a possible hotel stop for no particular reason, but again, it seemed closed-down and deserted. We didn't find a place to stop for the night until we left town and got over the state line, by which point I was struggling with consciousness while I drove.
